Programmed the concerts, recruited a chamber orchestra of 35 players from SF’s professional orchestras, contracted with the venues, wrote, designed and executed marketing campaigns, raised funds from SF music supporters, managed concert operations, library functions, rehearsals, stage logistics, instrument rentals, and finance.

AMERICAN PHILHARMONIC ASSOCIATION • Santa Rosa, CA

Founding Music Director / General Director / President of the Board

    • Founding: Recruited by the Cotati City Council to start an orchestra in 1998. Liaison to City Council. Facilitated the enrollment meetings for artists and volunteers inside a new governance model resulting in fifty-five players the first season. Led the group conversations for creating the Charter of the organization inside a new paradigm for orchestra. Designed and implemented a democratic, yet highly accountable and workable system for organization governance, personnel performance management, and community building.

    • Fundraising: Trained, led, and managed the all-volunteer fund-raising team to win several grants from the Community Foundation, the California Arts Council, Irvine Foundation, and major individual donors.

    • Community Building: Instituted and implemented the American Philharmonic Young Artist Awards, yearly collaborations with Santa Rosa Symphony Chorus, Santa Rosa Nutcracker, and free concerts for young people. Engaged the Hispanic community with New World composer programming and Spanish language live translation at concerts.

    • Operations: Directed and managed an all-volunteer operations team doing logistics, rehearsal setup, hospitality, post-concert receptions for the public and artists, office volunteers, fund raisers, etc.

    • Finance: Designed as the first truly crowd-sourced symphony orchestra, the American Philharmonic produced up to eighteen concerts per year to audiences averaging ~800 per performance. Free admission to attend. People were asked from the stage to pay what they could to exit in a “Pay It Forward” spirit. This worked remarkably well. The organization’s earned income grew at double digit rates for ten years until interrupted by the Great Recession.

    • Contracting and Negotiations: Managed a multi-week adversarial conversation and won agreement and reconciliation with IATSE and AFM Union representatives in a dispute regarding the Santa Rosa Nutcracker. Contracted with venues, five soloists, seventy-five orchestra musicians, and about thirty lay volunteers per year.

    • Music Technology: Invented a new technology (OSIRES™) that makes the orchestra’s string section sound four times larger with no discernable electronic or acoustical artifacts. This enabled the APO to perform the large Romantic repertoire with the full dynamic range and tonal balance of a major symphony orchestra.

    • Tour Management: In 2009, the Ministry of Culture of the People’s Republic of China invited APO to perform in seven major cities in China in 2010-2011. Led the China Tour Team in negotiations, programming, planning and travel administration and logistics to successfully field a sixty-person orchestra, their spouses/partners, for a two-week international tour.
